13th April, 1919 – a short story

Hey there!

It's been a while when I last posted my post. Today, through a short story, I pay my tribute to all the people massacred at the Jallianwallah Bagh in 1919.

Hope you like it!

The Promise - a short story

© Bhavishya Khunger, 2021

I look outside the window, towards the vast sea with my moist eyes. The empty harbour indeed seems peculiar, I thought. I remember going out on small walks with mum, chattering about almost everything, with soft waves striking the shore. We would usually sit beside the shore, our feet drowned in the cold sea, waiting for my dad (actually, step dad) to come over.

Everyone changes with time... and so had my mum. Now-a-days, she always spent her time lying on the bed, rarely talking with anyone. She just woke to grasp the pile of pills into her mouth, and then she again laid down, going into a deep sleep. I didn’t know the reason of her sudden disappointment.

Soon, I came to know, she was among the millions of those, who were infected by the deadly virus. Maybe, that is why I wasn't allowed to sleep with her. I don't know how she was affected by it, maybe, just because she was a doctor. However, the positive point was – she was recovering.

As she was recovering, she made a promise that she would take me to the beach at dusk on my birthday. The day was today. But mom wasn’t here.

“Does she return?” I asked my step- dad as he entered the room.

He moved his head horizontally, right and left, to say no. How dumb was I to ask that, I thought.

How can a person return from the coffin buried inside the soil?

I sighed . . .

Thanks for reading this short write up :)
I hope it made you realise the reality of life. Life is like a story, no one knows the real ending of it. Sometimes, it may end like a short story or may become the largest novel ever written. It's never in one's hands. What we can do is - write the story of our life.

Keep Smiling! Stay Happy!

Thanking You!
